An installation or software update failed

Use `pcdup` diagnostics and durable logs to identify registration, download, verification, and install failures.

  • The update action reports a failure or stops part-way through.
  • One or more services remain unhealthy after the update.

Diagnose the failed update

Keep the device powered, record the first failure, and inspect the durable update information before trying the operation again.

  1. Keep the device powered and connected

Do not interrupt power during an active installation. If the process has already failed, record the message and time before retrying.

  2. Run update diagnostics

Check registration, the planned installation, the local install cache, and the consolidated diagnostic log.

    pcdup diagnostics registration
    pcdup diagnostics install-plan
    pcdup diagnostics install-cache verify
    pcdup diagnostics log
  3. Inspect the durable update logs

Find the first failure in the update log. Additional staged-install details may be available in `last-failure.json` and `install-events.jsonl`.

    tail -n 150 /var/log/pcd/pcdup/pcdup.log
    cat /var/lib/pcd/pcdup/log/last-failure.json
  4. Verify services after a completed update

When the update completes, reload the dashboard and health monitor. If one component remains unhealthy, continue with the service-health article and keep the update logs.
